DoD STARBASE - CT is an educational program which responds to the needs of today's
youth through hands-on activities focusing on science, technology, engineering, math, (STEM)
personal development, and drug awareness and prevention.

The program provides students with 20-25 hours of stimulating experiences in science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) for the East Hartford, Hartford, Waterbury and New
Britain school districts.

The students at STARBASE experience a high quality program with opportunities such as
designing a keychain and building an International Space Station on an engineering (CAD)
program.

Thank you to the CT National Guard, General Thaddeus Martin, and MPSC
(Military Personnel
Services Corp) for their support of the STARBASE CT program.

Why is STARBASE important?

During this decade, employment in science and engineering occupations
is expected to increase at almost four times the rate for all other
occupations.  At the same time, less than 1% of current elementary school
students will seek advanced education in the sciences.  In a comparison
of 15 year olds in 27 countries, US youth ranked 18th in math and 14th in
science.

Watch this
video to see why STARBASE is a very important program.
What is STARBASE?

During the five days of the program, STARBASE students explore
chemistry as they use the scientific method to conduct, observe and
analyze chemical experiments. STARBASE students explore technology
and engineering using a high profile CAD program called Pro Engineer.
STARBASE students engage in many math concepts;use Excel to make
graphs; and use coordinate snap grids to complete circuits.  STARBASE
students are actively engaged as they learn challenging science and math
concepts that will help them understand the world in which they live.
"We have observed that our students who
participate in the [STARBASE] program excel in their
thinking and reasoning skills in the classroom."
- Waterbury's Assistant Superintendent,   Dr. Sequeira

What is the long term effect of STEM programs like STARBASE?

Gazment, shown below with his Project Manager, is a high school student who credits STARBASE
for sparking his interest in Science.  They are showing off their prototype of a plane, printed on a
3D printer, using the same CAD program that the STARBASE students use.

"The students love the program so much that next year's
students are already planning on which teacher they want -
the teacher that participates in the Starbase program."

STARBASE is always looking for mentors to come in and help with the program. Possible
volunteer opportunities include:

  • Assisting students on a CAD program
  • Assisting students during science experiments
  • Assisting students during engineering design activities
  • Talking about how STEM is related to your job/career
  • Teaching during an after-school mentoring program

Please contact Melissa Vanek if you are interested in becoming a mentor.  You can call (860)
